I was about to sleep. My wardrobe door was open. I have a pack of lavender hanging on the door knob. My iPad was in the wardrobe, top shelf.

iPad calendar rang an alert for a calendar event for next day. I heard it. Then my nose immediately picked up the smell of lavender. This was surprising to me as I was not feeling the smell before.

Is it that before sleep all senses go to standby mode, and they get active in a cascade on an alert situation felt on any sense?

How to connect MAC and Philips WiFi MediaConnect Software

Run the WiFi MediaConnect software designed for Windows platform in a virtualised Windows environment.

* There is a free app for Mac called VirtualBox. After you install VirtualBox, you can install a copy of Windows 'under' VirtualBox.

* Make sure you give the Windows machine a bridged network connection.

* Also install and run the WiFi media connect software in the virtual windows environment.

* Make sure your TV is switched on and connected to your home network.

* Make sure your PC is connected to the same network as your TV. You can do this by checking the IP address of both devices.

The first three decimals should be the same: e.g. PC (192.168.1.10) and TV (192.168.1.12).

* For the TV to be visible within the network, the “Show PC media files” setting which is located in the “Network settings” menu should be set to “ON”.

* If your PC is running a firewall program, check that your firewall allows “Wi-Fi MediaConnect” to send and receive data through the network. Refer to your firewall documentation on how to do this.

* After you connect your TV and PC to your network, wait for a minutes before you start to project. It can take a little time to establish new connections.

How to use Time Capsule as an external drive

2. Under the General Tab, put a check mark to "Connected Servers". This will show all connected servers as mounted volumes as well as your Time Capsule on your desktop.

3. Go to your desktop, double click on your Time Capsule & create a folder called "External Hard Drive".

4. Now you can drag and drop files there just like an external drive.

Manufacturing Knowledge: Turkish Prototype

On Oct 5th of 2010, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Davutoğlu
gave the keynote speech at the opening ceremony in İstanbul Şehir
University. I devote this blog post to the highlights from his speech.

The subject is the knowledge discovery. What do we have to do as a
nation to advance in knowledge discovery? We need to change our
whole attitude, and we have to change it now. And, it starts with our
youth. There are five pillars to build a foundation on.

1. Character: each member of this country has to develop his character
and self-identity. We must be proud of who we are as Turks, where we
came from, where we are now. We have to adopt a universal outlook
such that we are all global citizens with total self-consciousness. We do
not have the luxury to have complexes, or any type of feelings of fancy
towards another culture. Such feelings totally obscures and stands before
having a clear mind. A clear mind that is free from dogmas, superficial fuss,
hypes, aggression, and a clear mind that is free from double-standardization
in evaluating and interpreting ideas is what we need to have. With clearer
vision, we can see the road ahead.

2. A comprehensive perspective: knowledge is universal. We do not have the
luxury to subdivide knowledge into various fields and subfields and so on, i.e.,
further fragmenting the total. However, a discovery in a subfield may have far
reaching consequences in every aspect of our society, and it would be a big
mistake to have a local perspective on outcomes and observations and
evaluations, and therefore miss the global/big picture.

3. Action-oriented: a person needs to be action oriented. Having character
and a global perspective on things, the prototype Turk has to act on his
hunches, ideas, and pursue her dreams. Without proper observation,
synthesis & analysis , and then action, we cannot change our
environment. We cannot change the status-quo. If we cannot renew
ourselves and adapt, we will slowly transform into followers, and certainly
not into leaders. The regular methodology is to first observe, then
orient (synthesis & analysis), decide (form an hypothesis) and
finally act. Our actions will change our environment, new set of
observations will appear. These will either support our hypothesis or
reject it. In anyway, it will teach us how to build knowledge.

4. Communication: discovered knowledge has to be applied in society.
It has to be used, it has to be integrated into the belief system of the
society. These usually take the form of best practices. Ethical, methodical,
and efficient new ways to do things. Communication is a natural outcome
of discovery of knowledge. We cannot leave the society and the world we
live in devoid of this new information that help them see and explain the
world more precisely. Otherwise, "we know less" means "we will believe more".
More belief inherently instills fear into our souls. Fear is the number one
enemy of innovation and disruption. Disruptive thinking is the itch to find
new ways of doing things, i.e., innovation.

5. Economic engine: In order to sustain such an environment where these
prototype Turks live in, an economic & politic order has to be setup
as the core driving engine. Only if all these activities are executed under
a well defined policy and financed either through its own economic engines
or external funding, then we can create an environment where these
Prototypes thrive instead of being social outcasts.

Finally, I will conclude with a translation of one of his visions.

Universities that are able to successfully institutionalize are the universities
that seek solutions to basic and important problems of human beings. And
they are going to implicitly attract everyone in the search for such a solution.

Polate responsibly: Interpolation vs. Extrapolation.

Interpolation means: given a set of data points, you fill in between data points. Sometimes, you only have sample data. And, you want to fit a nice looking curve on this sample. You can interpolate what data will be for "missing" values, which is strictly in between sample data points according to a topological time order. Therefore, you fill in the blanks. This is called Interpolation.

Extrapolation is also filling in the blanks, but the blanks are in distant future. You are in a way forecasting or predicting what data may look like, given past data. You are doing this, because you want to understand the unknown, or come up with an explanation for the unknown. This is called Extrapolation.

If you look ahead, you extrapolate. If you look back and reflect, you interpolate.

Warren believes that children who inherit great wealth tend to do nothing with their lives, nor does he believe that it is good for society if there is an upper class created by inherited wealth. IT IS NOT GOOD FOR A SOCIETY TO HAVE HERITAGE FUELED WEALTH. He believes that a country prospers better if society is a MERITOCRACY, with people earning what they get. For this reason, he donated the $32 billion fortune he made from investing to charity, so that it would go back to help the VERY SOCIETY that created it. Let this noble thought find a place in the hearts of all who make their fortunes IN THIS WORLD.

Working Capital Management

Working capital has two components: current assets and current liabilities.

Current assets are important to businesses because they are the assets that are used to fund day-to-day operations and pay ongoing expenses. Depending on the nature of the business, current assets can range from barrels of crude oil, to baked goods, to foreign currency.

Current liabilities are bills that are due to creditors and suppliers within a short period of time. Normally, companies withdraw or cash current assets in order to pay their current liabilities.

Having explained both components, we can define the management of the capital as follows: Working capital management is an accounting strategy where the focus is on maintaining efficient levels of current assets and current liabilities, in respect to each other.

Cash is the lifeline of a company. If this lifeline deteriorates, so does the company's ability to fund operations, reinvest and meet capital requirements and payments. Take a simplistic case: a spaghetti sauce company uses $100 to build up its inventory of tomatoes, onions, garlic, spices, etc. A week later, the company assembles the ingredients into sauce and ships it out. A week after that, the checks arrive from customers. That $100, which has been tied up for two weeks, is the company's working capital. The quicker the company sells the spaghetti sauce, the sooner the company can go out and buy new ingredients, which will be made into more sauce sold at a profit. If the ingredients sit in inventory for a month, company cash is tied-up and can't be used to grow the spaghetti business. Even worse, the company can be left strapped for cash when it needs to pay its bills and make investments. Working capital also gets trapped when customers do not pay their invoices on time or suppliers get paid too quickly or not fast enough.

The better a company manages its working capital, the less the company needs to borrow. Even companies with cash surpluses need to manage working capital to ensure that those surpluses are invested in ways that will generate suitable returns for investors.

Working capital management ensures that a company has sufficient cash flow in order to meet its short-term debt obligations and operating expenses. Implementing an effective working capital management system is an excellent way for many companies to improve their earnings. The two main aspects of working capital management are ratio analysis and management of individual components of working capital.

A few key performance ratios of a working capital management system are the working capital ratio, inventory turnover and the collection ratio. With ratio analysis, we can conduct a quantitative analysis on the information in a company's financial statements. Ratios are calculated from current year numbers and are then compared to previous years, other companies, the industry, or even the economy to judge the performance of the company.

Working capital ratio is used to measure a company's ability to recover operating costs from annual revenue. It is calculated by taking the company's total annual expenses (excluding depreciation and debt-related expenses) and dividing it by the annual gross income.

Inventory turnover is calculated as the ratio of cost of goods sold divided by the average inventory. The ratio should be compared against industry averages. A low turnover implies poor sales and, therefore, excess inventory. A high ratio implies either strong sales or ineffective buying. High inventory levels are unhealthy because they represent an investment with a rate of return of zero. It also opens the company up to trouble should prices begin to fall. A company's inventory turnover ratio is best seen in light of its competitors. In a given sector where, say, it is normal for a company to completely sell out and restock six times a year, a company that achieves a turnover ratio of four is an underperformer.

Collection ratio indicates the average number of days it takes a company to collect unpaid invoices. A high ratio indicates that the company is having problems getting paid for services or products. It is sometimes seasonally affected, rising during busy seasons and falling during the off-season. To account for seasonality, the average accounts receivable could be used instead. Insurance companies, for instance, receive premium payments up front before having to make any payments; however, insurance companies do have unpredictable cash outflow as claims come in. A big retailer like Wal-Mart has little to worry about when it comes to accounts receivable: customers pay for goods on the spot. Inventories represent the biggest problem for retailers; as such, they must perform rigorous inventory forecasting or they risk being out of business in a short time. Manufacturing companies, for example, incur substantial upfront costs for materials and labor before receiving payment. Much of the time they eat more cash than they generate.

Depending on the analysis results, the management can identify areas of focus such as inventory management, cash management, accounts receivable and payable management.

A vivid example of a successful working capital management strategy is by Computer giant Dell. Dell bolstered its shareholder value by focusing entirely on working capital management. The company's world-class supply-chain management system ensures that the number of days that a company takes to collect payment after making a sale stays low. Improvements in inventory turnover increase cash flow, leaving Dell with more cash on the balance sheet to distribute to shareholders or fund growth plans.

In conclusion, cash is king. How well a company handles its cash indicates the company's health in present and the future and opens it up for a rigorous evaluation of its potential value to the owners, i.e., the shareholders.

Turkey vs. United States (U.S)

I am a citizen of Turkey. I lived in the states for 10 years, 5 years of graduate school and another 5 years spent in profession, worked at two great companies. My youth? I was in Turkey till the age of 22. I am back, a permanent resident in Turkey.

I think I can draw a crucial distinction between Turkey and the United States. The U.S has well integrated into their "social system" (and still does) all the best practices for life: if there is something that makes it easier for people to go through their daily life, you have it there. Tightly integrated. In Turkey, it is almost the opposite. Best practices are well integrated in successful people's heads. It stays there, as a competitive edge. Or else, in other people, it is more of a series of tips to remember and be aware of all the time without building well structured shortcuts.

So what would this mean? It means we Turks will waste a lot of precious time for the stuff that we could have taken for granted only if we incorporated such best practices well into the heart of our social system.

I strongly believe that Turkish community has a grand potential to outreach and exceed any expectations we could ever have in building a great nation to innovate and lead the way in the new century for a "better world".

As best as I can tell, he stays there because the entire staff at the cafe knows how to bring him his iced tea. In a tall thin glass, with ice, with a little carafe of hyper-sweet sugar water on the side. He does not ask for it; they just bring it. Every person who meets with Ted at the hotel notices it. I think it makes Ted happy that his friends notice it. Having something personalized can make one feel special. No wonder Web 3.0 is all about personalization. Personalization of services, web sites, social media, cars, etc., etc.

Every market has a few sneezers. They are often the early adopters, but not always. Finding and seducing these sneezers with your purple cow is the essential step in creating an ideavirus. The sneezers use your product, and the best of all, they will talk about your product and recommend it to their friends. With passion! And they in turn will start talking about it, creating a market that you will be proud of at the end.

It used to be that Engineering invented, Manufacturing built, Marketing marketed, and Sales sold. There was a clear division of labor, and the president managed the whole shebang. The marketer got a budget, and bought ads with it. Marketing was really called "advertising". Marketing was about communicating the values of a product AFTER it had been developed and manufactured. This is not a valid strategy anymore. The product attributes are now at the heart of what it means to be a marketer. Marketing is:

the act of inventing the product.
the effort of designing it.
the craft of producing it.
the art of pricing it.
the technique of selling it.

How can a Purple Cow company not run by a marketer? If a company is failing, it is the fault of the senior management. The reason is most probably because they are running a company, not marketing a product. So best advice is: Go take a design course. Seriously. Send your designers to a marketing course. And both of you should spend a week in the factory.

To come up with a purple cow at your own private life or professional life, you have to get into the habit of asking, "Why not?" Almost everything you don't do has no good reason for it. Almost everything you don't do is the result of

fear,
or inertia,
or a historical lack of someone asking, "Why not?"

There are a lot of definitions here and there as to what SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS mean.

I wanted to simplify and put together a short list of definitions each with a vivid example of its kind. Finally, an excerpt from MIT Centennial on the whole Cloud Computing vision.

1. Software as a Service (SaaS): Application hosted in the cloud.

E.g: Gmail

2. Platform as a Service (PaaS): Application development environment and runtime hosted in the cloud.

E.g: Force.com

3. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Developers/administrators obtain general computing, storage, messaging services.

E.g: Amazon AWS

In any given, especially a dire, situation, you can learn to strip away so much noise and clutter and just focus on the few things that would have the greatest impact. In order to develop this ability, you have to think and act in line with The Stockdale Paradox. You have to

- Retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.

AT THE SAME TIME

- Confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

This is very important. If you are able to operate from both sides of this paradox, essentially balancing it so well, and adopt it, then you will dramatically increase the odds of making a series of good decisions and ultimately discovering a simple, yet deeply insightful, concept for making the really big choices.

Once you have this unifying concept, you will be very close to making a sustained transition to breakthrough results.

When it comes to getting started, good-to-great leaders understand three simple truths.

First, if you begin with “who,” you can more easily adapt to a fast-changing world. If people get on your bus because of where they think it’s going, you'll be in trouble when you get 10 miles down the road and discover that you need to change direction because the world has changed. But if people board the bus principally because of all the other great people on the bus, you’ll be much faster and smarter in responding to changing conditions.

Second, if you have the right people on your bus, you don’t need to worry about motivating them. The right people are self-motivated: Nothing beats being part of a team that is expected to produce great results.

And third, if you have the wrong people on the bus, nothing else matters. You may be headed in the right direction, but you still won’t achieve greatness. Great vision with mediocre people still produces mediocre results.

Embrace change... and where exactly?

On a recent trip to my hometown Seyhsadi, Amasya in Turkey, I had a peculiar experience. I visited my grandmother and grandfather (the mother side). They live in a cozy house that looks out on to the great village hall across a humble looking mosque. That night, there was a wedding in the village, and the excitement was everywhere... here! and there! The young girls in my grandmother's house all giggly rushed to the wedding site as well.

When I was young, at around age 10, the weddings in the village were quite tribal with adolescent men dancing around a huge bonfire out of a tire. A tire! It usually was quite a scene to be seen. Memorable as I remember now.

All thoughtful and with nostalgia, I looked out the window and asked the household whether or not the bonfire and the dance custom is still observed. To my call for answer, the fireworks then lighted up the sky cheerfully. And I laughed. Sadly.

Tanri bu kez ona dur dedi!

Cocuk yolunu degistirmek istedi ama artik karanlik...

Ama eskilerden bir soz oldugunu animsadi "karanligin en yogun oldugu vakit gun agarmadan onceki vakitti" :)

Black Swan! The Unknown Unknown

Rare events happen rarely. There are many many rare events. Chances are, there is a rare event happening at this very moment.

Planning for the known and the predictable is a quality that does not take much merit. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to plan for the unpredictable, the unknown.

Yesterday, I am listening to the audio book, Black Swan. It talks about rare events. In one chapter, we listen to how lucky the real Casanova actually was among all the Casanovas, many unlucky. The Casanova thought his "etoile" was helping him. The word "etoile" is stuck in my head. Partly because I did not know French. The day after, I took a friend of mine visiting from out of town to Napa. For wine tasting. Among the group of people was a girl who suggested to visit Chandon, a winery. Never heard of before. We went upstairs to their patio, where people wine and dine casually. There it was, the name of the restaurant on the patio shined: Etoile!

It is a "cute" rare event. It is a petit black swan.

Did you get a dog!!! I hope you did, you know i always envisioned you walking your cute little dog around the city. the dog bundled in a cute sweater, tail in the air, while it walked beside you. You of course, equally stylish. You two will be besties and inseparable, spending days walking along the pier while everyone stares. Everyone watching and wishing they could be part of such a cute duo!

I decided to buy a dog. It has been quite a predicament lately, but it finally came to a resolution. So there. I am desperately looking for a stylish dog to take on a walk around the city on a dry Sunday afternoon. Any leads appreciated.
